I. The Ladies Paradise, Emile Zola
1. The salesmen harassed and exhausted, were camping amidst the havoc of their shelves and counters, which looked as if they had been wrecked by the raging blast of a hurricane.
2. Upstairs in the mezzanine departments the havoc was the same...gave the impression that an army of women had undressed there haphazardly in a wave of desire; while downstairs in the depths of the shop, the dispatch department, operating at full stretch, was still disgorging the parcels with it which were bursting, and these were being carried away in a final movement of the overheated machine.
3. There they had made a clean sweep, and it was quite easy to walk about; the hall was bare; the whole colossal stock of Paris-Paradise had just been torn to pieces and carried away, as if by a swarm of ravenous locusts.
4. Favier had made fifteen francs, whereas Hutin, who had managed to make only thirteen, had been beaten that day, and was furious at his bad luck.
5. The store was designed according to the different seasons of the year.
6. The store's accountants tracked all of the store's income and expenses.
7. The store's head employees were responsible for the store's cash and merchandise.
8. 'Mademoiselle Baudu, you're wanted in the head office.' The girl found Mouret alone, sitting in the great office hung with green rep.
9. She had immediately set about taking in her dress, and had spent an hour in front of the narrow mirror, combing her hair, without being able to smoot it down as she would have liked.
10. 'There! Tuck that one behind your ear...The bun is too high.' She said nothing, but let him continue to arrange her hair.

11. He was a strong man, and she got nervous and trembled when he was near her, and then this caused him to become more caring and kind.
12. He was treating her like a child, with more pity than kindness, his curiosity about the feminine sex merely awakened by the disturbing woman he felt developing in this poor, awkward child.
13. It was the dead lady, the one whom the neighborhood accused him of having kiled so that he could found the shop on her lifeblood.
14. At first she had to cope with the terrible rigours of work in the department. The parcels of clothes made her arms ache so much that, during the first six weeks, she would cry out with pain when she turned over at night, utterly worn out, her shoulders black and blue.
15. She felt her whole body being worn down, her limbs and organs were strained by the exhaustion of her legs, she had sudden disorders of a feminine nature which were betrayed by the pallor of her skin.
16. As to her colleagues...two months of patience and gentleness had not so far disarmed them. She was the object of wounding remarks and cruel tricks, and constant slights which, in her need for affection, cut her to the quick.
17. Her notes were perfect to the T.
18. ...she therefore abandoned Denise to the spite of the girls she particularly liked, court favorites who were always sucking up to her, busy feeding her with the endless flattery which her strong, authoritarian personality needed to make it blossom out.
19. Twice already he had come running to her for similar loans; but the first time it had only been a question of twenty francs, and the second time it was fifty francs.
20. It was a time of direpoverty for Denise, sometimes she would cry to herself after returning from work. Often she had to stay up all night repairing her small stock of clothes, mending her underwear, darning her night-dresses as if they were lace, not to mention her shoes, which she had patched as skillfully as any cobbler had done.
21. Some regular customers came into the department, and Madame Aurelie called her sevweral times and used to show off the new styles of coats. All the time she was stiffly posing in the way prescribed by fashion plates, she was thinking about the forty francs for Pepe's board and lodging which she had promised to pay that evening.
22. The gilrs would sometimes be quite active in the evenings, and then go to their beds, and deep sleep would descend on the rooms.
23. One man owned several expensive suits, even though he did not make much money.
24. ...she told Denise all about herself; her childhood spent at the mill, her father's ruin by a lawsuit, her dispatch to Paris to make her fortune with only twenty francs in her pocket...
25. Some jewelry - a brooch and a watchchain - shone on her dakr blue dress, drawn in attractively at the waist; beneath her velvet toque, adorned with a big grey feather, she was still smiling.
26. Don't you trust him, my dear...You want to be careful of men with big noses like that.
27. Certainly a poor girl couldn't support her two brothers, pay for the little one's board and lodging and buy treats for the big one's mistresses, out of the few left-over francs picked up from the other girl's cast-off customers; for it was to be feared that she wouldn't be given a salary before business picked up in March.
28. She kept meticulous records of all of her income and expenses.
29. But before doing so she forced Denise to accept the six francs she needed, begging her not to worry about it, but to repay her when she earned more
30. He pretended that he was crazy to get out of jail.

31. The salesgirls in the ladieswear department were especially friendly with the salesmen in the neighbouring lace department, although their enforced intimacy never went beyond jokes exchanged in low voices.
32. The assistant buyer in the lace department was abit of a joker, who used to pester Clara with salacious confidences just for a laugh, although he really had little interest in her and made no attempt to meet her outside.
33. ...in order to put Bourdoncle off the scent. As for Deloche, for a long time he contented himself with smiling at Denise; then becoming bolder, he murmured a friendly word to her when he bumped into her.
34. This Norman bragging merely disguised the fact that he picked up girls in barsand music-halls. Like all the young gentlemen in the drapery business, he had a mania for spending, and would go through the whole week in his department struggling like a miser for money, with the sole desire of throwing it away on Sunday at the races, in restaurants and dance-halls.
35. He never saved a penny, never put anything by; his salary was squandered as soon as he drew it, he cared nothing for the future.
36. He and Hutin, so friendly in the shop, would say goodbye to each other at the door and not exchange another word; many of the salesmen, in continual contact while at work, became strangers, ignorant of each other's lives as soon as they set foot in the street.
37. ...a little cafe in which the shop assistants from the Ladies' Paradise usually congregated, and where they brawled and drank, and played cards in the pipe smoke. They often remained there till almost one in the morning, when the exhausted owner of the establishment threw them out.
38. The words exchanged were as hard as bullets, and one evening someone even slapped someone else, behind some boxes of chemises. Perhaps this long-standing quarrely had originated because the girls in the lingerie department wore woolen dresses, whereas the girls in the ladieswear department wore silk...
39. ...and all on account of Denise!
40. The supervisors sometimes gave preferential treatment to obseqious employees.

41. The man deliberately got into debt, and then asked his mother for a loan in order to help him.
42. Pauline enjoyed eating fish stew.
43. But suddenly, in the nieghbouring room, there was aburst of voices which drowned all the others. There were yells, which must hvae been followed by blows, for scuffles and the crash of chairs were heard, a real struggle in which the river cries again rang out.
44. 'In any case,' said Pauline stiffly, 'she's terribly ugly, with her carroty hair...Honestly, I don't know where Monsieur Hutin picks them up, but each one's worse than the last.'
45. Life can be entertaining and fun, but life can also be serious and involve patience.

12:00PM - 1:00PM
12:15PM
I. Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care, Dr. Benjamin Spock, M.D.
1. Hyperactivity (ADHD) - What is hyperactivity? It's normal for young children to have boundless energy and no common sense. Lots of three years olds have a hard time sitting quietly through an entire picture book. Many four-year-olds act first and think later. Even at five, sustained attention to things that aren't really very engaging, like picking up toys and most skill-drill worksheets is the exception, not the rule.
1-b. When people use the term "hyperactivity" to refer to a behavioral disorder, they are referring to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. According to the standard definition (which changes a bit with each new addition of the American Psychiatric Association handbook), ADHD includes three main parts: inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.
1-c. Inattention is defined as very low ability to focus and sustain attention to dull or difficult tasks. Impulsivity is doing whatever comes to mind without considering the consequences of one's actions first.Hyperactivity is an unusually high need to run around, or to have some part of the body ( hands, feet, mouth) in constant motion, even when it's appropriate to be still.
1-d. When these problems seriously interfere with a child's life, when they're persistent and occur in multiple settings (home, school, neighborhood), the diagnosis of ADHD is likely. A child who is doing okay in school and at home does not have ADHD, even if he has endless energy, clowns around in class, or daydreams a lot.
1-e. ADHD is very hard on children and families. The children costantly get into trouble; their teachers scold them and blame them for every disruption; their parents find themselves shouting and punishing much more than they would like; their friendships usually don't last. Sadness, loneliness, resentment, and anger often follow.
2. ADHD, inattentive presentation. Whatever you call it, these children have a real problem. Their minds wander or get stuck on irrelevant details; they miss what's important; they're often disorganized and easily distracted. They may read well, but forget everything they've just read; do their homework, but forget to turn it in; lose things all the time, daydream a lot. The consequences - failing grades, frustrated parents, self-blame - can be severe. But the problem often goes unrecognized because the children aren't disruptive; they may even be unusually quiet. Experts are still unsure if ADHD-I is really a subtype of ADHD, or something different. So if you're a little confused, you are not alone.
12:30PM
3. Does ADHD exist? Nearly every professional agrees that there are some children who are extremely hyperactive, impulsive, and inattentive as a result of a malfunction of the control and attention circuits in the brain. Using the standard psychiatric definition, a large number of children in the United States-somewhere between 5 percent and 10 percent-have ADHD. The number seems to grow every year, but no one is certain whether this is because more and more children have problems with brain development, or because more and more professionals are able to recognize the condition; or maybe it's both.
4. So although it is clear that there are many children who are struggling in school and at home, and whose problems fit the description of ADHD, it's not clear how many of them have abnormal brains. I suspect that many of them-especially the younger ones-have brains that are perfectly healthy but simply are not well suited to doing what we now reuire all children to do, namely, sit still, listen, and follow directions for paper and pencil tasks all day long.

These symptoms often impact work, school, and relationships, and while hyperactivity might decrease in adulthood, restlessness and executive function challenges (like planning, time management) can become more prominent. --Google
14. Dyslexia symptoms involve difficulties with reading, writing, and spelling, stemming from issues with phonological processing (sounds in language) and often appearing as slow, effortful reading, trouble sounding out words, poor spelling (like letter reversals), difficulty with sequences (alphabet, numbers), and word-finding issues, varying by age but persisting into adulthood, including avoiding reading and slow processing. --Google

11. If you build more farms, then you can feed more people, at a lower cost.
12. If you need help, then contact me, and I can able to help you. Drive or fly me to where you are, because I have a lot of knowledge, experience, and physical abilities.

17. My hobbies include: watching tv, reading, foreign language studies, cooking, athletics, listening to music, and other masculine (maskulinikos) subjects.
